The history of Mega Millions can be traced back to 2002, when it was known as The Big Game. At that time, it was only played in Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, and Virginia. In May 2002, the game was expanded to include Arizona and Ohio. The following month, it was expanded again to include New Jersey. In September 2002, The Big Game was renamed Mega Millions. This was done in order to reflect the lottery's new minimum jackpot of $12 million. In January 2003, the game was expanded to include Washington, D.C.

In October 2013, Mega Millions underwent a major change. The matrix of numbers that could be drawn was changed from 52 numbers to 75 numbers. This made the odds of winning Mega Millions much lower, but also increased the potential for larger jackpots.
